- Medical Weight LossThis procedure is ideal for people who have a significant amount of excess, hanging, or flabby skin, either because they have had major weight loss or huge weight fluctuations or simply due to aging. They may feel self-conscious about their upper arms and try to keep them covered.
- GlaucomaCertain medical or ophthalmic conditions can make this surgery risky. These include hyperthyroidism (e.g., Graves’ disease), dry eye or lack of sufficient tears, glaucoma, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure. Patients with these conditions may be prohibited from undergoing blepharoplasty due to the elevated surgical risks involved. Individuals without proper orbital anatomy (insufficient bone structure to support the procedure) may also not be good candidates for eyelid surgery.
- Pregnancy
- Labor and DeliveryA tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove sagging or loose skin after extreme weight fluctuations or childbirth or due to normal aging. In most cases, a tummy tuck will help to restore weakened or separated muscles, resulting in a firm and smooth abdominal profile. This helps patients regain a more youthful appearance.
- Depression
- Mental HealthGood candidates for blepharoplasty are individuals who are in good physical and mental health and have reasonable goals for improving the eyelids and surrounding area. Most blepharoplasty patients are at least 35 years of age, but if baggy or sagging eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have this procedure done as early as 18 years of age.

- MRIBeach, 43, an Alpharetta elementary school assistant principal, was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2012. Her gynecologist had recommended a mammogram and MRI after her sister, Kate Hegidio, was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common type of breast cancer.
- ChemotherapyPatient 4: 29 y/o female had bilateral mastectomies for carcinoma of her breast. She was BRCA positive and underwent chemotherapy prior to her mastectomies. She wore a 34C bra. She underwent immediate bilateral reconstruction with a DIEP flap for her right breast and a muscle-sparing free TRAM flap for her left breast. The pictures shown are one year after her reconstruction surgery.
- Radiation TherapyThe latissimus flap is a pedicle flap that utilizes the skin, fatty tissue, and latissimus muscle from the upper back to the chest to reconstruct the breast. The procedure can correct the defects left by partial breast removal, total mastectomies or from chest wall deformities such as Poland’s syndrome. Patients who desire autologous reconstruction but are not candidates for a TRAM or DIEP are ideal candidates. The flap may be combined with a tissue expander to allow for a larger volume of breast upon completion. The flap is released through a crescent-shaped skin paddle and rotated around to fill the defect. Hospitalization is 2-3 days. Patients are given a combination of pain relievers, muscle relaxants, antibiotics, and a detailed instruction sheet on discharge. Office visits take place one week following hospital discharge and again six weeks following surgery. Full recovery time is six weeks. Patients are to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity during this time. Scars continue to fade and improve up to a year after surgery. After the patient is well-healed, outpatient surgery is planned for revision (shaping) of the flap and nipple reconstruction. Tattooing is performed in the office under local anesthesia once the new nipple is healed. A delay in this timeline may occur with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, poor or delayed wound healing, or infection.

- BotoxInjectables or soft-tissue fillers can help restore volume and fullness to your face, reversing the signs of aging. When injected beneath the skin, injectable facial fillers plum up creased wrinkles and sunken areas of the face. They can also add fullness to your lips and cheeks. Injectables aren’t just for women, either. Men can use injectables to help them look younger and more alert. Botox® and Juvederm
- Brow LiftOne of the first signs of aging on the face is often the appearance of wrinkles and creases between the brow and the forehead. The natural aging process, everyday facial movements, and excessive sun exposure can cause these unwanted features to appear and make people look (and feel!) older than they actually are. It can also give the appearance of being stern, tired, upset, or sad. A brow lift addresses these concerns. When performed by a double board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Mark Deutsch, MD, FACS, Atlanta patients can eliminate these signs of aging without appearing unnatural.
- Eyelid SurgeryAs is true with most cosmetic procedures, eyelid surgery is generally considered elective surgery and, therefore, is not covered by insurance. Patients are responsible for the full payment of the procedure.
- LiposuctionIt can be frustrating after putting a lot of time and effort into a diet and exercise routine, only to realize you still have a flabby belly or jiggly thighs when the rest of your body is slender and trim. In such cases, many men and women turn to liposuction to achieve the look they desire.

- OtoplastyOtoplasty, also known as ear shaping, is a procedure that corrects the prominence of the ear (ears that may “stick out” too far). This procedure is also known as ear pinning. Depending on the source of ear prominence, an incision is made behind the ear and/or within the fold of the front of the ear. Excess cartilage and skin are removed to reshape the ear. Deficient cartilage can be placed through incisions to correct constricted ear deformities. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia but does not usually require an overnight stay. Patients are required to wear a headband for compression for the first week and then to sleep in the band for an additional five weeks. Rare complications include infection and poor wound healing.

- Body ContouringBody contouring is typically required for patients who have lost significant weight and have loose skin. When weight is lost, the fatty tissue goes away but the overlying skin fails to withdraw and remains stretched. This can occur in the neck, arms, back, breast, abdomen, buttocks, and inner thighs. Body contouring generally involves removing the excess skin and tightening the internal tissue. Many times this can be combined with liposuction if needed. For some patients that have excess skin that wraps around from the flanks to the back, the back tissue needs to be removed as well and this is termed a “belt lipectomy.” For the inner thighs and buttocks, the treatment is the same: removing and tightening the excess skin combined with liposuction as needed.
- GynecomastiaGynecomastia is a benign enlargement of the male breast, resulting in a fuller look in the pectoral area of a male’s chest. This could be due to a hormone imbalance or hormone therapy. It is a very common condition, with up to 50% of males experiencing it in their lifetime.
- Cosmetic SurgeryAre you unhappy with your natural breasts? Perhaps you have more sagging than you’d like? Or maybe your breasts seem too small, asymmetrical, or disproportional? If so, you might be considering cosmetic surgery in hopes of improving the size, shape, or look of your breasts. However, you may be unsure exactly which breast enhancement procedure is right for you.
- Forehead LiftA facelift, medically known as “rhytidectomy,” can reduce these signs of premature aging. A facelift smoothes the loose skin on your face and neck, tightens underlying tissues, and removes excess fat, resulting in a firmer, fresher appearance. The areas addressed are the middle and lower parts of the face, including the neck, jowls, and cheeks; facelifts do not treat the upper portion of the face, which is accomplished with a forehead lift.
- Skin CancerWhat do warmer weather, sunshine, and spending time outdoors have in common? Skin cancer! Directly related to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other types of cancer combined. One in five Americans will develop this disease over the course of a lifetime. Still, there is good news: most skin cancer is preventable. Here are some of the best ways to stay safe...
