General Info
Sisters Together And Reaching, Inc ( STAR ) is a non-profit, 501 ( c ) Christian-based/community-based organization. STAR's mission is to provide spiritual support, direct services and prevention education to the HIV infected, affected and at risk communities in a holistic woman-centered environment and STAR's goal is to become a full-fledge women's holistic health center. In 1991, Sisters Together And Reaching, Inc ( STAR ) was founded to address the barriers to adequate care facing HIV infected African-American women and their families in Baltimore City. Since that time, STAR services have included case management, prevention case management, capacity building assistance locally and nationally, financial assistance, support groups, outreach, resource information, referrals, art and writing therapy, pastoral and life situational counseling, telephone help line, teen support groups, prevention education, volunteer training workshops, and buddy support to an estimated 18, 000 women, men and community residents. Although STAR remains woman-focused, requests for similar support services to HIV infected African-American men increased over the years and in 1997 STAR began to offer the same range of services to men that were available to women. This was in response to an evaluation completed by female clients ; who advocated for services for the HIV infected men in their lives. Although the primary target population is African-American women, STAR does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender or sexual preference. All clients are welcomed and treated with respect, compassion and dignity.
