Yes the adopting price is a bit high but If it doesn't fit your income then maybe its not time to get a pet, also agree with more animals would be adopted but less would be taken care of too, its hard on both ends on this one, They have been great to me, and extremely helpful, if you are able to volunteer they always can use the help, Great place

In response to Disappointed210...

In response to Disappointed210: On behalf of Coastal Humane Society, I'd like to offer apologies if your shelter experience was not what you expected. We do try and make the adoption fees reasonable, but we depend on at least some revenue from adoptions to help offset the costs of the care we provide our animals. We invest a lot in each animal that comes through our doors, including spay/neuter surgeries, regular health exams, vaccinations, flea treatments, and microchips (for dogs) and other medicine as needed. In truth, if you were to buy an animal from a breeder or even if you got the animal free of charge from another source, you would probably end up spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars for the same services we provide our animals before they go up for adoption. The average spay/neuter surgery is $220, sometimes more! Owning a pet is expensive, but shouldn't be a luxury. Everyone should have the chance to own a pet, which is why we have adoption promotions periodically on our dogs, cats and small animals. We hope you'll keep us in mind when you adopt, we're certain we can get you the right pet at the right price! Please let us know if you want to talk more, we really appreciate the feedback! Thank you! You can reach us any time at (207)725-5051 or by email at clientrelations@coastalhumanesociety.org. If you would like a list of the services/veterinary care we provide our animals, please visit http://www.coastalhumanesociety.org/adopt/faqs Again, thank you for your feedback and thoughtful advice. -CHS

I was very disappointed in the extremely high prices to adopt a pet. You would think that they would be happy to have people adopt their pets. I understand that they want to eliminate the possibility that you will neglect or abuse your new pet. I also know that they want people that will properly provide for their pets and weed out those who haven't thought through the financial responsibility of owning a pet. $200? Really? Where is the incentive to adopt a pet from a shelter? Why not just buy the pet you want from a store or breeder? I get that they have expenses to cover but building stronger relationships in the community and with their volunteers might help reduce those costs and lead to higher adoption rates.
