General Info
The State of Connecticut has forested hills, new urban skylines, shoreline beaches, white-steeple colonial churches, and historic village greens. From colonial times, Connecticut has been predominantly a manufacturing state. It offers classic Ivy League schools, modern expressways, corporate offices and small farms. Connecticut became the 5th state to join the United States in 1788. However, the state s first constitution established a representative government in1639. The state is famous for inventors that include Charles Goodyear, Elias Howe, Eli Whitney and Eli Terry. Inventions include vulcanized rubber, friction matches, sewing machines, steamboats, safety fuses, lollipops, corkscrews, mechanical calculators, cylindrical locks and the submarine. Nicknamed the Constitution State, Connecticut has had its capitol in Hartford since 1875.
