- Vermont Electric Cooperative is a consumer-owned electric distribution cooperative. It was founded in 1938 in Eden Mills, Vt., to serve residents in parts of rural Lamoille County who had been bypassed by investor-owned utilities. In 1970, the cooperative acquired the International Electric Company, and in 2004, completed the acquisition of Citizens Communications Company s Vermont Electric Division. Vermont Electric Cooperative serves more than 37,000 member-customers in nearly 100 towns throughout Vermont and three towns in Massachusetts. Its territory includes the Vermont counties of Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orleans, Windham and Windsor.
