People do not understand that this is a time share. When you buy the membership to American Campgrounds you still have to pay dues whether you use it or not. I have owned my for about 10 years. We used it a lot at the beginning but have not in the last two years. We still own the time share whether we like it or not. It is just like any other time share you buy.

Tom H. I am in this same situation and it's now October 2015. Did you get with the Attorney General? What was the outcome? They claim I owe them $749 in maintenance fees and won't take payments and won't negotiate anything less than $450 but want that paid in full or 2 payments. My contract doesn't have maintenance fees in it either and I unwittingly paid them until I was laid off and couldn't afford them any more.

We have been members of American Campgrounds Inc. for many years and have not used our membership for the last 10+ years. We basically were lured back to our home park at Kalamazoo the summer of 2014 with the false marketing call. We were told that it may be possible for us to sell back our membership and we would need to come in for an appointment. We did make an appointment, my husband hand to leave work a few hours early to go to this appointment. As Donna E. stated on 10/24/2014, it was all a ruse to once again get us there for a sales pitch for “upgrading” our membership and get additional money from us. The people hosting the appointment "Knew nothing" about buying back our membership! We have nearly 8- 9k into this membership and various upgrades through the first years when our kids were young and we were using it. We made it very clear at this appointment that we are done with American Campgrounds and that we are against the lies they use to get you to their appointments for another sales pitch. We stopped paying our $70.00 quarterly "maintenance fees" after this appointment, our last payment was July 2014. Now their collection agency "Conrad Acceptance Corp. Collections" has threatened to "report" the nonpayment of maintenance fees so it will show on our credit report and will continue to do so every year until we pay up. However they did say if you pay the $280.00 plus a collection fee of $92.63 right now we can dissolve your contract, it is a onetime thing and you would have to do it "now". We read over our contract and find nothing about having to pay a "maintenance fee" for this membership. We do not believe this is legal and we are going to the Attorney General with this issue.

Is there anyone out there that knows the procedure to cancel our membership to American Campgrounds Inc.? We don't use it and don't want to continue to pay the maintance fee. Our cerificate says we need to pay a fee if we transfer the cert. I would rather not do that.

The only way to rate this campgrounds practices is with a negative star which there isn't one here. Stay away!!!!

If you want out of your contracts you need to write a complaint letter to the Attorney Generals office. They will help you but you don't get any of your money back. Just peace of mind that you will never have to pay anymore money to those people. I just got out and know of several other people who have too. Only took me 2 months to hear back from them. Good Luck



I was at SLR 7-12-14 and they haven't changed a bit. Still wanting to get more money out of it's members. I received a letter 3 weeks before from them telling how the rumors weren't true about them closing the campgrounds. That they closed for the winter months to lower operating expenses and ended their contract with their phone service provider and got a new more affordable bundle deal but were unable to keep the old phone numbers. This was followed by a brief explaination regarding the Sister Parks/Reciprocal Parks. "As many of you may know over the last 20 yrs we have changed reciprocal programs and sister park agreements; as our agreement with you allows us to do. (Jay pointed this out, #9 on back of your contract.) We have always had your best interest in mind and always strive to provide the most benefits and privileges to our outdoor recreational life stye, while keeping the cost down. We no longer except Outdoor Adventure members under any sister park agreement to allow more availability to our members at SLR. As a result of this we can no longer go to those parks under the sister park agreement. However, I have negotiated a deal for all SLR members to get into those parks through a new reciprocal program. This program will come at no additional cost to you. To get your new cards or if you have questions call Charlie at (269)459-8307. I called and made appointment to get that new card that would let me still go to the Sister Parks. After I got my new picture taken I met with Jay and he wanted me to purchase the new and better upgraded membership that wouldn't be available till next year for a mere $11,999. Less if I got it now plus I could pay half of what I would owe for yearly fees between now and when I reached 75 years old and never pay another yearly fee. I told him no thanks I just came for the new photo ID to get me into the sister parks. He said that in order to do that I would have to purchase another reciprocal program for $150 a year and pay $10 a night at the campgrounds. When I mentioned the letter he said thats what Charlie who is marketing says but not honored by SLR. So basically I was told since I don't want to give them more money for less I wasted my time going out there. Jay also said that they are not selling anymore memberships just as 2 other couples came in. They over heard me complaining and they didn't look to happy. Hopefully I saved them from my fate. If anyone knows of any legal actions being taken at this time I would appreciate information on it. Here is a list of the phone numbers I have to contact SLR hope they are of help. Do not get involved with these people! They prey on people and their emotions. My husband and I went there just after he had brain surgery and so we thought our hope of ever having a cabin was gone. They took us all around and showed us everything looks nice. Then we tried to use our coupons,{they had told us they had great ice fishing} they then told us they close up for the winter! Reservations are in possible in any other state as well. It was all lies and now they are trying to take us to court I so wish we had never gotten involved!

NEWS! I contacted the place that I send my $180 every year and got two new phone numbers: 1-269-459-8308 for reservations

1-269-459-8304 for FAX.

I then reached someone in reservations and got these numbers for sales:

1-269-459-8307 and 1-269-459-8306.

PLEASE do not get involved with these people!!! What they say and what is true are two different things. Because of this we cancelled our membership the day after we bought into it. They told us our money would be returned within 10 days. It has been 25 days, and I can't even get them to return my calls. I emailed them, and that didn't help either. Looks like we'll have to file a dispute with our credit card company to settle it. For lack of integrity on their part, I would rate them at 0 stars, or lower! Just glad we opted out when we did!
