I'm about 2.5 weeks post-op and I'm left feeling slightly disfigured and depressed. The inner corner of my left eye has a fork in it because he cut into my epicanthal fold. I can live with the swelling, the bumpy and uneven incision line, and the scar from my incision on my right eye that veers outside of my fold and upwards towards my forehead instead of down towards my cheek like the left side. These things take time and I understand my unnaturally high and big creases may eventually settle into a more natural looking crease. I totally get that. What I can't live with is skin that folds or forks on the inner corner of my eye. It looks completely atrocious and I can't understand why in the world he would cut into my epicanthal fold or not discuss this with me beforehand to ensure I understood what my options were. When I returned to his office a few days after the procedure to discuss this with him, he told me that if he hadn't I would've complained that the fold wasn't deep enough in my left eye. Seriously? So you unilaterally decided this was the best decision when I'm the one that has to live with this disfiguring fork in my eye? He also told me that I have to trust that he did the best job with the limitation I placed on him (referring to the fact that I decided not to undergo the epicanthoplasty procedure he recommended as I thought the benefit of achieving a more parallel crease did not outweigh the risk of visible scarring). Barely able to contain his irritation that I returned to his office and was keeping him from other not yet paying customers, he told me I was a difficult patient and that I need to meditate or find some way to help alleviate my anxiety. He asked me why I returned to the office and said "if you show up, are we going to go into the operating room right now to fix the problem?" Translation: Why the hell are you here wasting my time? So I guess when you state on your blog that patients should "maintain active communication with the office throughout the recovery period for emotional support and informed care," it's really false advertising and you don't really want to be bothered by patients' concerns or questions after undergoing a life altering procedure on the most important feature on our face. He also told me that Korean speaking patients usually trust his aesthetic judgement and skills and merely ask to make them look beautiful. Translation: He doesn't want you to be an active participant in what can potentially be one of the most important cosmetic procedures of your life.
