      General Info
      Catholic schools have always played an important role in teaching and sharing the Catholic faith in the Oshkosh region. As people migrated from Europe in the late 1800's, parishes were organized and churches were built. As parishes evolved, a first consideration was to establish a school and all six early Oshkosh parishes eventually operated elementary schools. In addition, St. Peter and St. Mary operated both elementary and four-year high schools for several years.Lourdes, the first central Catholic high school, was opened in 1959 and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary in February 1960. It was built through the combined efforts and support from all of the parishes in the Vicariate. It operated under the direction and authority of the Green Bay Diocese Corporate Board of Education and the local Board of Trustees responsible for creating district policies, approving and implementing operating budgets and performing other functions as outlined in district by-laws. Therefore, from the beginning, Catholic schools in the Oshkosh region were totally supported and promoted by the local parishes. Parents sacrificed and paid tuition to send their children to the schools. Nuns, brothers and other religious taught in the schools under agreements made between their orders and the parishes. Their departure from parish schools in the 1970s and 1980s led to the employment of lay personnel leading to greater costs, increased tuition, and declining enrollments. Some schools were forced to close and others decided to jointly operate.The consolidation of catholic schools began in 1992 with the establishment of the Oshkosh Area Catholic Education System (OACES). All of the schools except Sacred Heart and Lourdes were involved in the first joint effort. St. Peter was designated as St. John Neumann Middle School, and the joint elementary schools were established as St. Frances Cabrini at St. Mary Parish, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton at St. Vincent Parish. In 1997, all Catholic schools in Oshkosh were united under one system called the Unified Catholic Schools (UCS) of Oshkosh.
