- VaccinationVaccinations are an important preventative measure you can take to keeping your pet healthy. We recommend annual vaccinations for dogs and outdoor cats. Dogs who go to dog parks, groomers or, boarding facilities should be vaccinated for kennel cough with annual or biannual bordetella vaccines. Dogs who hike, hunt, and are exposed to the wilderness should be protected from Leptospirosis and Lyme disease as well as distemper. We offer recombinant vaccines for DHPP (distemper). Bordetella is usually an oral vaccine (no injection necessary). Lyme, Lepto and Rabies vaccines are non-adjuvanted vaccines administered to select animals with exposure to these infectious agents (usually ticks and open water sources, respectively). Cats that are in and outside daily should be vaccinated for Feline Leukemia, Distemper and Rabies annually with recombinant vaccines. Cats who are mainly indoor should be vaccinated for Distemper every 3 years. Please see our recommendations for monthly flea, heartworm and tick prevention.
- Comprehensive ExaminationEast Petaluma Animal Hospital recommends annual physical examinations. On routine exams our doctors are able to identify potential life threatening diseases, and medical issues which you may not be aware of. Our pets mask many of their symptoms and in our busy lives we may not notice the subtle changes that can negatively affect our beloved friends. In routine exams, we are able to diagnose and prescribe appropriate treatment for your pets.
- Parasites Treatment and ControlWe offer in-house diagnostic testing. During the exam of your pet we are able to perform heartworm tests, fecal testing, urinalysis testing, blood chemistry testing, digital radiographs, cytology of the skin and growths. Our in-house diagnostic services also include ultrasound exams and, endoscopic exams.
- Pain ManagementMost recently, we’ve added Laser Therapy to speed healing of open wounds, provide muscle and arthritic pain relief as well as assist in healing infected tissues. Watch this laser therapy video to learn more about how this new technology alleviates discomfort in our pets...
- Upper Respiratory Illness TreatmentFeeding recommendations for rabbits are pretty simple. Think of your rabbit as sort of a small hopping horse. Both animals are “hind gut fermenters.” They have a large caecum, which is like an oversized appendix, to digest foods that are fairly coarse such as grasses, hays, and stem-like plants. Rabbits possess bacteria in their caecum which can break down these cellulose containing foods to liberate the much needed energy and nutrients these foods contain. The more simple foods such as grains and fresh greens provide more simple carbohydrates which are easily digested and do not promote the healthy cellulose-digesting bacteria of the hind gut fermenter. So basically, the more treats of fruits, veggies, mueslix, yogurt drops, etc that you provide the more likely the rabbit will develop improper digestive organisms. This leads to a syndrome called dysbiosis…which loosely translates into abnormal bacteria. This can be a life threatening or fatal condition for rabbits since they no longer have the proper bacteria to provide digestive processing of high fiber foods. In addition, soft fruits and vegetables in excess do not allow for proper grinding of the cheek teeth. This can lead to problems with upper respiratory disease affecting the lacrimal ducts, eye discharge, ocular infections, tooth root abscesses, overgrown teeth, anorexia and death. So let’s give our rabbits a high fiber diet with minimal simple sugars.

- Heart Disease TreatmentWhen your pet requires surgery, we know this can be a time of stress and concern for you and your pet. By choosing East Petaluma Animal Hospital, you can have confidence that your pet is receiving expert care from our staff of dedicated and compassionate medical professionals. We recommend pre-anesthetic blood testing prior to any surgical procedure to ensure your pets safety during anesthesia. We use the safest anesthetics available during surgery and design an individual anesthetic plan that is specific to your pets health needs. During surgical procedures, we support patients with intravenous fluids as well as continuously monitor your pets EKG’s, oxygenation (pulse oximetry), temperature, blood pressure and respirations.
- Periodontal Disease TreatmentRoutine cleanings and dental checkups are vital to the health and longevity of your pet’s life. Routine cleanings work to prevent periodontal infections. Preventative measures that you can do at home such as weekly brushing, dental diets, OraVet™ prevention gel, rawhide chews, Greenies®, and other bones will help prevent the plaque and tartar buildup on the tooth surface. Veterinary dentistry is constantly progressing. Periodontal disease is the cause of about 75% of all dental problems. It is also the cause of 95 % of all bad breath cases. More than three quarters of cats and dogs have dental disease. Dental care is necessary to provide optimum health and optimize quality of life. Untreated diseases of the oral cavity are painful and can contribute local and systemic diseases. Plaque and tartar accumulation constantly grow and infect the mouth. These bacteria may enter the bloodstream through bleeding gums and cause such problems as heart valve infections (endocarditis) and kidney infections (nephritis).
