Building Houses, Building Hope, Building Philadelphia

General Info
Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia is an independently chartered affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), the largest nonprofit homebuilder worldwide. To transform lives and our city by building quality homes in partnership with families in need, and uniting all Philadelphians around the cause of affordable housing. Globally, our Vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Our Mission Statement: Seeking to put Gods love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Our decent, affordable homes are sold to local hard-working, low-income families who demonstrate a need for safe, affordable housing. Families qualify for the homeownership program by showing a need for safe, affordable housing and by meeting income criteria. Before buying a house, they contribute 350 hours of sweat equity toward Habitat's projects--building on home construction sites, completing homeowner education courses, and more. Mortgage principal payments are recycled back to build additional homes through our Fund for Humanity. Our Weatherization and Home Repair Programs provide critical home repairs and improvements that maintain a home's safety and livability. Weatherization and Home Repair services help to maintain existing low-income homeowners in their houses, preserving their stability and preventing homelessness and vacancy. These programs operate on the same principles of family investment, no-interest loans, and volunteer labor. Since 1985, Habitat Philadelphia has empowered 170 families to achieve their dreams of homeownership and break the cycle of poverty through our Homeownership Program. Our Weatherization and Home Repair Programs have provided services to over 80 families. Habitat Philadelphia focuses its efforts on building and repairing multiple homes in a community rather than scattered houses in different areas. In this way, we can transform entire neighborhoods, one block at a time.
