South Dakota Department of Transportation, located in Pierre, S.D., is responsible for construction of roads and highways and maintenance of local transportation systems. It operates a planning and engineering division that provides assistance in the development and designing of bridges, roads and transportation inventory management. The department also provides vehicle records management and is responsible for the issuance of licenses to drivers of light and heavy vehicles. The department also operates various programs for the administration of vehicles, fuel taxes and motor vehicle titling and licensing for commercial and noncommercial vehicles. It also determines the taxes and fees for the interstate transportation carriers, which is used by the state and counties for the maintenance of public roads and highways. Additionally, the department issues permits for vehicles entering state of South Dakota and necessary information to travel throughout the state. It also develops and implements traffic safety programs and offers 24-hour emergency services in case of road accidents with the aid of patrol officers.
