- The American arm of the Scouting movement, the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated in 1910. Scouting began in England in 1907, based on the ideas of founder Sir Robert S. S. Baden-Powell and his book Scouting for Boys. It is one of the largest voluntary youth movements in the world, with a membership of more than 25 million individuals. The Boy Scouts of America serves young men and women in every part of the country through more than 300 local council service centers. Its areas of operation include fire safety, emergency preparedness, first aid, traffic safety, swimming, lifesaving mile swimming, sailing and life guarding. Through its international division, The Boy Scouts of America sponsors several programs throughout the year that include European Camp, International Camp Staff, World Brotherhood Exchange and Jamboree-on-the-Internet. It is a recipient of Silver World Award, World Conservation Award and International Scouter's Award.
